A proton has spin and magnetic moment ju...

A proton has spin and magnetic moment just like an electron. Why then its effect is neglected in magnetism of materials?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Magnetic dipole moment of a spinning electron is given by:
`mu_e = (eh)/(2m_e)`
Magnetic dipole moment of a spinning proton is given by
`mu_e = (eh)/(2m_p)`
As ` m_p gt gt mu_p`
Thus, the effect of magnetic moment of proton is neglected
