Why do we prefer a choke coil to a rhestat in controlling a.c.?

Both choke coil and a rheostat can be used for controlling AC current . But choke s better than rhestat as the power dissipated in the choke coil is zero . Whereas in case of rheostat power is dissipated in the form of heat.
