Young's double-slit experiment is performed in a medium with refractive index greater than that of air. How will the interference pattern differ from the one performed in air as the medium?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When Young.s double-slit experiment will be performed in the medium with refractive index greater than that of air, the wavelength of the light will change to
`lambda. = (lambda_("air"))/("refractive index of medium") implies lambda. < lambda_("air")`
As the wavelength of light decreases, the fringe separation will decrease. Thus interference pattern formed in medium with greater refractive index than that of air will have smaller fringe separation.
