Discuss the intensity of transmitted light when a polaroid sheet is rotated between two crossed polaroids?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Consider that a light of intensity `I_0` emerges out from first polaroid `(P_1)` and passed through another polaroid `(P_2)`, inclined at an angle `theta` with `(P_1)`.
The intensity of the light will be `I_0 cos^2 theta`
Consider another Polaroid `(P_3)` kept crossed to first polaroid `(P_1)`.
Since the angle between `P_1 and P_3` is `(90^@ - 0)`, the intensity of light after passing from `P_3` will be `I_0 cos^(2) cos^2 (90^@ - theta)`
`I = (I_0 cos^2 theta) (I_0 cos^2 (90^@ - theta))`
`implies I = (I_0 cos^2 theta sin^2 theta) = ((I_0 sin^2 2 theta))/(4)`
Thus light emitted from the crossed polaroid will be maximum when both the polaroids are at `45^@`.

The axes of a polarizer and an analyzer are oriented at right angles to each other. A third Polaroid sheet is placed between them with its axis at 45^(@) to the axes of the polarizer and analyzer. (a) If unpolarized light of intensity I_(0) is incident on this system, what is the intensity of the transmitted light? Two polaroids are placed at 90^(@) to eachother and the transmitted intensity is zero. What happens when one more polaroid is placed between these two, bisecuting the angle between them. How will the intensity of transmitted light vary on further rotating the third polaroid ?

What is is plane polarised light ? Two polaroids are placed at 90^(@) to each other and the transmitted intensity is zero. What happens when one more polaroid is placed between these two, bisecting the angle betweeen them ? How will the intensity of transmitted light vary on further rotating the third polaroid ? (b) If a light beam shows no intensity variation when trasmitted through a polaroid which is rotated, does it mean that the light is un-polarised ? Explain briefly.
