What is the shape of the wavefront in each of the following cases ?
(a) light diverging from point source.
(b) light emerging out of a convex lens when a point source is placed at its focus.
( c) the portion of the wavefront of light from a distant star intercepted by earth.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(a) The wavefront will be spherical for light diverging from a point source.
(b) Light rays emerging from the lens are parallel. So, the wavefront will be plane in this case.
(c ) The wavefront intercepted by the Earth for a distant star at infinity is plane because a small area on the surface of a large sphere is nearly planar.
