The ground state energy of hydrogen atom...

The ground state energy of hydrogen atom is `-13.6 eV`. What is the potential energy of the electron in this state

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Given, Ground state energy of hydrogen atom,
E=total energy =-13.6 eV
K.E. of electron =`(kZe^2)/(2r)`
P.E. of electron =`-(kZe^2)/(2r)`
`therefore` P.E.=-2(K.E.)
Since total energy
E=K.E.+P.E.=K.E.-2(K.E.)=-K.E.
`therefore` K.E. =-E=-(-13.6)=13.6 eV
P.E.=-2(K.E.)=-2 x 13.6 =-27.2 eV
