Two weights w, and w, are attached to the ends of a string which passes over a frictionless pulley. If the pulley is placed in a lift rising up with an acceleration equal to that of gravity i.e. '8', the tension in the string :

A

`(4w_(1)w_(2))/(w_(1)+w_(2))`

B

`(2w_(1)w_(2))/(w_(1)+w_(2))`

C

`(w_(1)w_(2))/(2(w_(1)+w_(2))`

D

`(w_(1)w_(2))/(w_(1)+w_(2))`

The correct Answer is:
a

When the lift is stationary, then `T=(m_(1)m_(2)g)/(m_(1)g+m_(2))=(2W_(1)W_(2))/(W_(1)+W_(2))`
When the pulley is accelerated upward with acceleration g then each of the weight is doubled as
W.= m (g +a) = 2 mg = 2W
`:.T=(2(2W_(1))+(2W_(2)))/(2W_(1)+2W_(2))=(4W_(1)W_(2))/(W_(1)+W_(2))`
Hence correct choice is (a)

Two masses M_1 and M_2 are attached to the ends of a string which passes over a pulley attached to the top of an inclined plane Theta . The gangle of inclination of the plane is 0. Take g = 10 ms^-2 . If M_1 = 10 kg . M_2 = 5 kg , Theta = 30 , the acceleration of mass M_2 is

Two equal masses of mass M each are attached to a string passing over a smooth pulley which is attached by a chain to the celiling. The tension in the chain is:

Atwood machine Atwood used the system to prove Netwons laws of motion. Atowood machine consists of two loads of mases m _(1) and m _(2) attached to the ends of a limp of inextensible string as shown in tghe figure 11. The string runs over a pully. FInd the acceleration of each load and tension in the string (m _(1) gt m _(2))

A light string passing over a smooth light pulley connects two blocks of masses m_(1) and m_(2) (vertically). If the acceleration of the system is g//8, then the ratio of the masses is:

The two ends of a train moving with a constant acceleration pass a certain point with velocities M and w. The velocity with which the middle point of a train passes the same point is:

One end of a long string of linear mass density 8.0 xx 10^(-3) kgm^(-1) is connected to an electrically driven tuning fork of frequency 256 Hz. The other passes over a pulley and is tied to a pan containing a mass of 90 kg. The pulley end absorbs all the incoming energy so that reflected waves at this end have negligible amplitude . At t=0, the left end ( fork end) of the string x = 0 has zero transverse displacement ( y = 0 ) and is moving along positive y - direction. The amplitude of the wave is 5.0 cm. Write down the transverse displacement y as a function of x and t that describe the wave on the string.

A metal block of area 0.10 m^2 is connected to a 0.010 kg mass via a string that passes over an ideal pulley(considered massless and frictionless). A liquid with a film thickness of 0.30 mm is placed between the block and the table . When released the block moves to the right with a constant speed of 0.085 ms^-1 . FInd the coefficienyt of viscosity of the liquid.
