In a chemical laboratory , a student broke the thermometer while performing an experiment . Immediately , the mercury which was spilled over was removed by the lab - incharge by sprinkling sulphur on it . The teacher asked the students to predict the type of change / reaction associated with the above process. Explain with apporpriate reasons.

When mercury gets spilled on the floor or any surface , it can be collected by sprinkling sulphur powder because Hg reacts with S to form HgS.
