What is the basic difference between the terms electron gain enthalpy and electronegativity?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Electron gain enthalpy refers to the tendency of an atom in its gaseous isolated state to accept an additional electron to form a negative ion. Electronegativity refers to the tendency of an atom to attract the shared pair of electrons towards it in a covalent bond. Thus, electron gain enthalpy is the property of isolated atomswhereas electronegativity is the property of atoms in molecules.
