`CO_(2)` is non - polar while `H_(2)O` is polar. What conclusion do you draw about their structures from these?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`CO_(2)` is a linear molecule, therefore the resultant dipole moment of two `C=O` bonds get cancelled giving zero dipole moment. On the other hand, water molecule is not linear. It has angular shape and the bond moments of two `O-H` bonds give resultant dipole moment.
