(a) What happens if a bar magnet is cut into two pieces : (i) transverse to its length. (ii) along its length?

In each case, one will get two independent magnets.
(i) When cut transverse to the length, the pole strength of the new magnets will remain the same whereas the magnetic lengths will be halved. Thus dipole moment = Pole strength `xx` Magnetic length will be halved.

In short, we get two magnets each of pole strength equal to that of original magnet and dipole moment half of the original magnet.
(ii) When cut along its length, the pole strength and hence dipole moment of each will be halved but magnetic length will remain the same.
