A bullet is fired normally on an immovable wooden plank of thickness 2 m. It loses 20% of its kinetic energy in penetrating a thickness 0.2 m of the plank. The distance penetrated by the bullet inside the wooden plank is

A

0.2m

B

0.8m

C

1m

D

1.5m

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
C

The wood offers a constant retardation. If the bullet loses 20% of its kinetic energy by penetrating 02 m. It can penetrate further into `4xx 0.2 = 0.8 m` with the remaining kinetic energy So the total distance penetrated by the bullet is `0.2 + 0.8 = 1 m`

In some demonstration, a police officer fires a bullet of mass 50.0g with speed 200ms^(-1) on soft plywood of thickness 2.00 cm. The bullet emerges with only 10% of its initial kinetic energy. What is the emergent speed of the bullet?

A rocket is fired ‘vertically’ from the surface of mars with a speed of 2 km s^(–1) . If 20% of its initial energy is lost due to martian atmospheric resistance, how far will the rocket go from the surface of mars before returning to it ? A 100 kg block is started with a speed of 2.0 m s^(-1) on a long, rough belt kept fixed in a horizontal position. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the belt is 0.20. (a) calculate the change in the internal energy of the block-belt system as the block comes to a stop on the belt. (b) consider the situation from a frame of reference moving at 2.0 m s^(-1) along the initial velocity of the block. as seen from this frame, the block is gently put on a moving belt and in due time the block starts moving with the belt at 2.0 m s^(-1) , calculate the increase in the kinetic energy of the block as it stops slipping past the belt. (c ) find the work done in this frame by the external force holding the belt.

An electric heater is used in a room of total wall area 137m^(2) to maintain a temperature of 20^(@)C inside it, when the outside temperature is -10^(@)C .The walls have three different layers of materials. The innermost layer is of wood of thickness 2.5cm, the middle layer is of cement of thickness 1.0cm and the outermost layer is of brick of thickness 25.0cm. Find the power of the electric heater. Assume that there is no heat loss through the floor and the celling. The thermal conductivities of wood, cement and brick are 0.125Wm^(-1)C^(-1) , 1.5Wm^(-1)C^(-1) . and 1.0Wm^(-1)C^(-1) respectively.
