A solid sphere has a radius of 1.5 cm and a mass of 0.038 kg. Calculate the specific gravity or relative density of the sphere.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Radius of the sphere R = 1.5 cm, mass m = 0.038 kg
Volume of sphere `V = 4/3 pi R^2 = 4/3 xx (3.14) xx (1.5 xx 10^(-2))^(3) = 1.413 xx 10^(-5) m^(3)`
Therefore, density `rho = m/V = (0.038 kg)/(1.413 xx 10^(-5) m^3) = 2690 kg m^(-3)`
Hence, the specific of the sphere `= (2690)/(1000) = 2.69`
