What is binding energy of a nucleus? Give its expression.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When Z protons and N neutrons combine to form a nucleus, mass equal to mass defect disappears and the corresponding energy is released. This is called the binding energy of the nucleus (BE) and is equal to `(Delta m)c^(2)`.
`BE = (Zm_(p) + Nm_(n) -M ) c^(2)`.
