Calculate the energy associated with the...

Calculate the energy associated with the first orbit of `He^(+)` . What is the radius of this orbit?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Energy of electron in nth orbit is
`E_n = -(2.18 xx 10^(-18) Z^2)/(n^2) J "atom"^(-1)`
For first orbit of `He^(+)` ,
`Z = 2, n = 1`
`E_1 = -(2.18 xx 10^(-18))/(1^2) xx (2)^2 J "atom"^(-1)`
`= -8.72 xx 10^(-18) J`
Radius of nth orbit is
`r_n = (0.0529 n^2)/(Z) nm`
`:. r_1 = (0.0529 xx 1^2)/(2) = 0.02645 nm`
