An iron rod is immersed in a solution containing `NisO_4 and ZnSO_4` . When the concentration of each salt is 1 M, predict giving reasons which of the following reactions is likely to proceed ?
(i) Iron reduces `Zn^(2+)` ions (ii) Iron reduces `Ni^(2+)` ions
Given : `E_((Zn^(2+)|Zn))^@=-0.76V,E_((Fe^(2+)|Fe))^@=0.44V and E_((Ni^(2+)|Ni)^@=-0.25V`

Text Solution

(i) The reduction potential of iron is more than that of zinc. Therefore , iron will be reduced . In other words, `Zn^(2+)` will not be reduced by iron.
(ii)The reduction potential of `Ni^(2+)` is more than that of iron . Therefore , `Ni^(2+)` will be reduced iron.
