Nitric acid is an oxidising agent and reacts with PbO but it does not react with `PbO_(2)`. Explain why?

Text Solution

PbO is a basic oxide and therefore, it reacts with nitric acid. It is simple acid - base reaction between PbO and `NHO_3`
`2PbO+4HNO_3 rarr 2Pb(NO_3)_2+2H_2O`
`" "("Acid - base reaction")`
On the other hand in `PbO_2` , lead is in +4 oxidation state and cannot be oxidised further . Therefore `PbO_2` is passive towards `HNO_3` and no reaction takes place.
