What effect does branching of an alkane chain has on its boiling point?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The boiling point of the alkanes decreases with branching. This is because with the increase in branching, the surface area of an alkane approaches that of a sphere. Since sphere has minimum surface are, therefore, van der Waals forces of attraction are minimum and hence boiling point decreases with branching.
