Extragenomic DNA is present in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. In some prokaryotes e.g. bacteria like Escherichia coli, extragenomic DNA is present in plasmids which have genes for some peculiar phenotypic character like antibiotic resistance and sexuality.
In Eukaryotes, extra genomic rings of DNA are present inside the inner chamber of mitochondria of both plant and animal cells so called mitochondrial DNA, and stroma of plastids so called plastidome.
