Difine medical termination of pregnancy (MTP).

(i) Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) refers to voluntary termination of pregnancy before the foetus becomes viable. The safest period for MTP is first trimester (e. upto 12 weeks) of pregnancy as during this period, the foetus is less intimately associated with the maternal tissues. It can be done by: dilation and curettage, or vacuum aspiration, or administration of prostaglandins. (ii) Significance. It helps in decreasing the human population size and in getting rid of unwanted and harmful pregnancies.
