Why sun appears reddish at sunset and sunrise.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) In morning and in the evening, the sun rays have to cover more distance through air AB or BC than at the noon time (BD).

`"Therefore blue disperses from the air more than red since dispersion" prop (1)/(lambda^(4))`.
For blue `lambda` is least and dispersion is maximum.

Answer the following, giving reason:- (a) When light travels from a denser to a rarer medium, the speed increases. Does it mean that there is an increase in the energy carried by the waves ? (b) The Sun appears reddish at sunset and sunrise.

With the help of a labelled diagram, explain why the sun appears reddish at the sunrise and the sunset.

Check the correct statements on scattering of light S1 : Rayleigh scattering is responsible for the bluish appearance of sky S2 : Rayleigh scattering is proportional to 1//lambda^(4) when the size of the scatterer is much less than lambda S3 : Clouds having droplets of water (large scattering objects) scatter all wavelengths are almost equal and so are generally white S4 : The sun looks reddish at sunset and sunrise due to Rayleigh scattering

Why does the sun appear red at sunset ?

What is scattering of light? Use this phenomenon to explain why (i) the Sun appears reddish at sum-rise, and (ii) the clear sky appears blue.

Why does the sun appear red at sunrise ?

Assertion : Sun looks reddish at sunrise and sunset. Reason : Sun rays have to pass through larger distance in atmosphere.
