What are the postulates of Bohr's model of an atom?

Text Solution

Postulates of Bohr.s atomic model.
1. An atom consists of positively charged nucleus responsible for almost the entire mass of the atom.
2. The electrons revolve round the nucleus in certain permissible circular orbital of definite radii.
3. The permitted orbits are those in which the angular momentum of an electron is integral multiple of `h/(2pi)`, i.e., `mvr = n(h)/(2pi)`
This is called "Bohr.s quantisation condition".
4. When electrons revolve in permitted orbits, they do not radiate energy. Such orbits are called nonradiating or stationary orbits.
The energy is radiated, when anelectron jumps from higher to energy orbit.
The frequency of the radiatio emitted is given by
`hv = E_i - E_f or v= (E_i - E_f)/h`
This is called Bohr.s frequency conditions.
