Why does the solubility of alkaline earth metal carbonates and sulphates in water decrease down the group ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In carbonates and sulphates , the size of the anion is much larger as compared to cations and the lattice enthalpy remains almost constant within a particular group .
Since with the increase in size of the cation down the group, the hydration enthalpies decrease, the solubility will also decrease . Therefore , solubility of alkaline earth metal carbonates and sulphates decreases down the group .
