A resistance coil is held horizontally and a magnet is allowed to fall vertically through it . Then the acceleration of the magnet while passing through the coil is

A

equal to g

B

less than g

C

more than g

D

sometimes less and sometimes more than g

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
B

As magnet falls flux linked with the coil increase . EMF is induced in the coil. Current is induced in the coil which establishes its own magnetic field. This induced magnetic field will oppose the falling of the bar magnet according to Lenz.s law . Hence bar magnet will fall with an acceleration less that g.
