When a magnet is released from rest alon...

When a magnet is released from rest along the axis of a hollow conducting cylinder situated vertically as shown in the figure

A

The direction of induced current in the cylinder is anti - clockwise as seen from the above

B

the magnet moves with an acceleration less than g = 9.8 m/ `sec^(2)`

C

the cylinder gets heated .

D

the magnet attains a terminal speed inside the cylinder if the cylinder is very long

The correct Answer is:
A, B, C, D

As the magnet falls due to the variation of magnetic flux induced current is developed in the hollow conductor so as to resist the cause of increment of flux: that means the velocity of the magnet is resisted . In the other word we can say that the magnet is retarded before entering into the hollow conducting cylinder. Consequently its acceleration will be less than g because magnetic force opposes the gravitational force acting on the magnet . If the cylinder is too long the magnetic force opposes the gravitational force on the magnet so as to yield zero acceleration after a long time to attain a terminal velocity. The eddy current in the cylinder also results in its heating .
