Acetic acid is halogented in the pressence of red P in which subsitution occurs at ` alpha `- carbon atom . This is known as Hell Vohlard Zelinsky reaction :
` CH_3 COOH underset(Cl_2 ) overset(red P ) to underset(Cl)underset(| ) CH_2 COOH `
However formic acid (HCOOH ) has ` alpha ` - hydrogen atom and therefore cannot undergo HVZ reaction .
