A man x can hear only upto 10 kHz and another man y upto 20 kHz . A note of frequency 500 Hz is produced before them from a stretched string. Then

A

different pitch but same quality

B

same pitch but different quality

C

same pitch and same quality

D

different pitch and different quality

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
B

A note of frequency 500Hz means it has a fundamental frequency of 500 Hz. The frequency of the fundamental which is relatively most intense determines the pitch of the note. The frequency of 500 Hz is within the audible range of both men, X and Y. therefore, they will hear the sound of same pitch.
Quality of sound depends upon the number of overtones persent in the note. X and Y have different audible limits (10 kHz and 20kHz). so the number of overtones heard by them will be different. as a result, they will hear sounds of different quality.
