Chemical bond implies

A

attraction and repulsion

B

attraction and repulsion balanced at a particular distance

C

attraction

D

repulsion

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

A chemical bond may be regarded as a force which holds the atoms together in a molecule. When two isolated atoms get very close to each other besides force of attraction, there also develop force of repulsion between the two nuclei and electrons of like charge. at a short internuclear distance the attractive force due to sharing, gaininig or losing electrons just balance the repulsive forces between particles of like charge, at which the molecules attain maximum stability.
