Which orbital of the following is lower ...

Which orbital of the following is lower in energy in a many electron atom?

A

2s

B

3d

C

4s

D

5f

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
A

According to (n + l) rule
for 2s, n=2, l=0
`therefore n+l=2`
Similarly for 3d=(n + l)=5
4s=(4+0)=4
`5 f to 5f = (5+3) = 8`
`therefore ` 2s is lower in energy.
