Life style diseases are increasing alarmingly in India .we are also dealing with large scale malnutrition in the population Is there any method by which we can address both of these problems together ?

The answer to both the problems of increased incidence of life style diseases and large scale malnutrition in the population is biofortification. It is the technique of producing crops with higher level of vitamins and minerals or proteins and heathier fats. It is the most practical mean to improve public health e.g.
(i) Maize hybrids with double the quantity of essential amino acids like lysine and tryptophan has ben produced.
(ii) Wheat variety with high protein content has been developed.
(iii) Rice variety with five times more iron has been developed.
(iv) Vitamin -A enriched carrots, spinach and pumpkin, Vitamin-C enriched bitter guard, bathua, mustard, tomato, protein enriched beans and garden peas have been developed at IARI, New Delhi.
