Alternation of Generations. The alternation of two different phases of the life cycle involving different functions is called alternation of generations. The life cle of Marchantia is completed in two different phases or generations, sporophytic diploid (2n) generation and gametophytic haploid (n) generation. The two generations differ morphologically, physiologically and genetically and they alternate in a regular sequence i.e. gametophyte gives rise to sporophyte and the latter give rise to the former again. This phenomenon of alternation of two generations is called alternation of generations.
