What is self-incompatibility? Why does self-pollination not lead to seed formation in self-incompatible species?

It is the incompatibility with in species and functional male gamete fails to affect fertilization with female gamete. Self-incompatibility is pre-fertilisation barrier. Extensive selfing of plants leads to highy homozygous individuals which have a low survival value. Nature has imposed self incompatibility to check it.
