Why is solution of potassium hydroxide used to absorb carbon dioxide evolved during the estimation of carbon present in an organic compound?

Carbon dioxide is acidic and it reacts with strong base KOH to form potassium carbonate.
`2 KOH + CO_2 to K_2 CO_3`
This results in increase in mass of potassium hydroxide. From the increase in mass of `CO_2` produced, the amount of carbon in the organic compound can be calculated by using the formula:
`% "Carbon" = (12)/( 44) xx (" Mass of" CO_2 "produced" )/( "Mass of substance") xx 100`
