A square conducting loop is placed near ...

A square conducting loop is placed near an infinitely long current carrying wire with one edge parallel to the wire as shown in the figure. If the current in the straight wire is suddenly halved, which of the following statements will be true? ''The loop will..''

A

stay stationary

B

move towards the wire

C

move away from the wire

D

move parallel to the wire

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
B

As here in this case, current through the nearest side of the square loop and current through the straight wire is in same direction. Therefore they will behave like two parallel wires carrying current in same direction. As a result the force generated between them will be attractive in nature and the square loop will move towards the wire. Now, if current is halved, force will decrease but still the force will remain attractive in nature and square loop will move towards the current carrying straight wire
