A lead storage battery comprises anode of lead, cathode of a grid of lead packed with lead dioxide (`PbO_2`) and 38% solution of suphuric acid as electrolyte. The following reactions take place in lead storage battery when it is working :
`{:("Anode:", Pb(s) + SO_(4)^(2-)(aq) to PbSO_(4)(s) + 2e^(-)),("Cathode:", PbO_(2)(s) + SO_(4)^(2-)(aq) + 4H^(+)(aq) + 2e to PbSO_(4)(s) + 2H_(2)O(l)):}`
Overall reaction: `Pb(s) + PbO_(2)(s) + 2H_(2)SO_(4)(aq) to 2PbSO_(4)(s) + 2H_(2)O(l)`
On charging the battery, the reverse reaction takes place, i.e., `PbSO_(4)` deposited on the electrodes is converted back into Pb and `PbO_(2)` and `H_2SO_4` gets regenerated.
