Depict the galvanic cell in which the reaction :
`Zn (s) + 2Ag^+ (aq) to Zn^(2+) (aq) + 2Ag (s)`
takes place. Further, show
:(i) Which of the electrodes is negatively charged ?
(ii) The carriers of the current in the cell.
(iii) Individual reaction at each electrode.

Text Solution

The cell may be depicted as:
`Zn (s) | Zn^(2+) (aq) || Ag^+ (aq) | Ag (s)`
(i) Anode i.e., zinc electrode is negatively charged.
(ii) The current is carried by the ions inside the cell and by electrons outside the cell.
(iii) At Anode: `Zn (s) to Zn^(2+) (aq) + 2e^(-)`
At cathode : `Ag^(+) (aq) +e^(-) to Ag (s) `
