Electrolysis of KBr (aq) gives Br(2) at ...

Electrolysis of KBr (aq) gives `Br_(2)` at anode but of KF (aq) does not give `F_(2)` . Give reason for disparity in behaviour.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`L_(F_(2)//F^(-))^(@)` has the highest reduction potential. Therefore, `F_(2)` is not liberated. Reduction potential of `O_(2)` is higher than that of `Br_(2)` . Thus, electrolysis of KBr (aq) gives `Br_(2)` and not `O_(2)`

Electrolysis of HCl(aq) gives hydrogen at cathode.

He_(2) molecule does not exist. Give reason.

A compound (A) is a sodium salt of dibasic acid and on electrolysis gives a gas (B), gas CO_(2) at anode, and H_(2)(g) at cathode. Gas (B) does not give any test for unsaturation, i.e., it does not decolourise Br_(2) water solution and aqueous KMnO_(4) solution. Gas (B) on reaction with (H_(2)+Pt) at room temperature does not react but at 120^(@)C , gas (B) gives butane. Identfy (A) and (B)

Assertion (A): Electrolysis of NaCl solution gives chlorine at anode instead of O_(2) .
