Describe the construction of a H(2)-O(2)...

Describe the construction of a `H_(2)-O_(2)` , fuel cell and the reactions `H_(2)O` taking place in it.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In the`H_(2)- O_(2)` cell, hydrogen and oxygen are bubbled through (+) Cathode porous carbon electrodes into concentrated aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide solution. Catalysts like finely divided platinum Aqueous electrolyte or palladium metal are incorporated into the electrodes for increasing the rate of reaction.
The electrode reactions taking place are given below:

`{:("Cathode", O_(2)(g) + 2H_(2)O(l) + 4e^(-) to 4OH^(-)(aq)`
Anode: `2H_(2)(g) + 4OH^(-) (aq) to 4H_(2)O(l) + 4e^(-)`
The overall reaction is:
`2H_(2)(g) + O_(2)(g) to 2H_(2)O` (l)
