Aqueous copper sulphate solution and aqueous silver nitrate solution are electrolysed by 1 ampere current for 10 minutes in separate electrolytic cells. Will the mass of copper and silver deposited on the cathode be same or different ? Explain your answer.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Different. According to Faraday.s second law, amounts of different substances liberated by the same quantity of electricity passing through the electrolytic solutions are proportional to their chemical equivalent weights. Since the equivalent weights of copper and silver are different, we shall obtain different masses of copper and silver.

(b) Aqueous solution of copper sulphate and silver nitrate are electrolysed by 1 ampere current for 10 minutes in separate electrolytic cells. Will the mass of copper and silver deposited on the cathode be same or different? Explain your answer.

Products of electrolysis depend on the nature of material being electrlysed and the type of electrodes being used. If the electrode is inert (e.g., platinum or gold), it does not participate in the chemical reaction and acts only as source or sink for electrons. On the other hand, if the electrode is reactive, it participates in the electrode reaction. thus, the products of electrolysis may be different for reactive and inert electrodes. A solution of CuSO_(4) is electrolysed for 10 minutes with a current of 1.7 amperes. What is the mass of copper deposited at the cathode? (Molar mass of Cu= 63.5g/mol).

Copper sulphate solution is electrolysed between two platinum electrodes. A current is passed unit 1.6 g of oxygen is liberated at anode. The amount of copper deposited at the cathode during the same period is:

During the electrolysis process 4 A electric current flows through a copper sulphate solution for 5 minutes. Determine the number of copper atoms deposited at the cathode.
