The `6563Å Halpha` line emitted by hydrogen in a star is found to be redshifted by `15Å`. Estimate the speed with which the star is receding from the Earth.

Use the formula `lambda.-lambda=(v)/(c)lambda`
i.e., `v=(c)/(lambda)(lambda.-lambda)=(3xx10^(8)xx15)/(6563)=6.68xx10^(5)ms^(-1)`

In a hydrogen atom, the electron and proton are bound at a distance of about 0.53 Å (a) Estimate the potential energy of the system in eV, taking the zero of the potential energy at infinite separation of the electron from proton. (b) What is the minimum work required to free the electron, given that its kinetic energy in the orbit is half the magnitude of potential energy obtained in (a)? (c) What are the answers to (a) and (b) above if the zero of potential energy is taken at 1.06 Å separation?

In hydrogen spectrum the wavelength of H_(alpha) line is 656nm, where in the spectrum of a distance galaxy H_(alpha) line wavelength is 706 nm . Estimated speed of the galaxy with respect to earth is ,

Electromagnetic waves of wavelenglth 1242 Å are indicdent on a metal of work funcation 2eV . The target metal is connected to a 5 volt cell, as shown. The electrons pass through hole A into a gas of hydrogen atoms in their groynd stte. Find the number of spectral lines emitted when hydrogen atoms come back to their froynd states after gaving veen excited by the electrons, Assume all excitations in H-atoms from ground state only ( hc = 12420 eVÅ )

The principle of 'parallax' in section 2.3.1 is used in the determination of distances of very distant starts. The baseline AB is the line joining the Earth's two locations six months apart in its orbit around the Sun. That is, the baseline is about the diameter of the Earth's orbit = 3xx10^(11)m . However, even the nearest stars are so distant that with such a long baseline, they show parallax only of the order of 1" (second) of arc or so. A parsec is a conventent unit of length on the astronomical scale. It is the distance of an object that will show a parallax of 1" (second of arc) from opposite ends of a baseline equal to the distance from the Earth to the Sun. How much is a parsec in terms of metres ?

The normal activity of living carbon-containing matter is found to be about 15 decays per minute for every gram of carbon. This activity arises from the small proportion of radioactive ""_(6)^(14)C present with the stable carbon isotope ""_(6)^(12)C . When the organism is dead, its interaction with the atmosphere (which maintains the above equilibrium activity) ceases and its activity begins to drop. From the known half-life (5730 years) of ""_(6)^(14)C , and the measured activity, the age of the specimen can be approximately estimated. This is the principle of ""_(6)^(14)C dating used in archaeology. Suppose a specimen from Mohenjodaro gives an activity of 9 decays per minute per gram of carbon. Estimate the approximate age of the Indus-Valley civilisation.

Consider a 20 W bulb emitting light of wavelength 5000 Å and shining on a metal surface kept at a distance 2m.Assume that the metal surface has work function of 2eV and that each atom on the metal surface can be treated as a circular disk of radius 1.5 Å. (i)Estimate no. of photons emitted by the bulb per second.[Assume no other losses] (ii)Will much time would be required by the atomic disk to receive energy equal to work function (2eV)? (iv)How many photons would atomic disk receive within time duration calculated in (iii)above? (v) Can you explain how photoelectric effect was observed instantaneously?

Two stars are 10 light years away from the earth. They are seen through a telescope of objective diameter 30 cm. The wavelength of light is 600nm. To see the stars just resolved by the telescope, the minimum distance between them should be (1 light year = 9.46 × 10^15m ) of the order of :

If one of the two electrons of a H_(2) molecule is removed, we get a hydrogen molecular ion H_(2)^(+) .In the ground state of an H_(2)^(+) , the two protons are separated by roughly 1.5 Å, and the electron is roughly 1 Å from each proton. Determine the potential energy of the system. Specify your choice of the zero of potential energy
