Explain the terms 'mass defect' and 'packing fraction'. What is the relation between mass defect and binding energy.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Mass defect : Difference between the sum of the masses of the nucleons of a nucleus and nuclear mass.
`Deltam = [Zm_(p) + (A - Z)m_(n)]-M`
Packing fraction : It is the ratio of difference between nuclear mass and mass number of the mass number or it is the mass correction for the nucleon.
`P.E.=(M-A)/(A)`
Binding energy `=Delta mc^(2)=Delta m931 MeV`
