Check the correctness of the formula f =...

Check the correctness of the formula `f = (mv^2)/(r^2)` where f is force , m is mass , v is velocity and r is radius.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Dimensionally , LHS= `[MLT^(-2)]`
RHS `=[M] [LT^(-1)]^2 //[L]^2 = [ML^(-1)T^(-2)]`
Since , the dimensions of both sides are not same, the formula is not correct physically.

For the equation F prop A^(a)V^(b)D^(c ) , where F is the force, A is the area, V is the velocity D is the density, the dimensional formula gives the following values

Let us consider an equation (1)/(2)mv^(2)=mgh Where m is the mass of the body. V its velocity , g is the acceleration due to gravity and h is the height . Check whether this equation is dimensionally correct.

Using dimensional methods, verify the correctness of the following relations, (i) a= v^2//r , (ii) F= mr omega^2 , (iii) S.T. = rhdg/2 In the above formulae 'r' stands for a dius, 'm' for mass , 'omega' for angular velocity , 'v' for linear velocity , 'h' for height , 'd' for density and S.T. for surface tension.
