Why copper matte is put in silica lined ...

Why copper matte is put in silica lined converter?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Copper matte mainly contains `Cu_(2)S` and FeS. For removing the gangue FeS, silica present in the lining of the Bessemer.s converter acts as a flux and forms slag (iron silicate) on reaction with FeO.
`underset("Gangue")(2FeS)+3O_(2)rarr2FeO+2SO_(2)`
`underset("Gangue")(FeO)+underset("Flux")(SiO_(2))rarrunderset("Slag")(FeSiO_(3))`
