Describe the three steps involved in the leaching of bauxite to get pure alumina (equations not expected).

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) Bauxite is concentrated by digesting the powdered ore in a concentrated solution of sodium hydroxide at 473-573 K and 35 bar pressure. `Al_(2)O_(3)` is leached as sodium aluminate.
(ii) Aluminate solution is neutralised by passing `CO_(2)`. Hydrated `Al_(2)O_(3)` is precipitated by seeding.
(iii) Hydrated `Al_(2)O_(3)` is filtered, dried and heated to get pure `Al_(2)O_(3)`.
