(a) This is an example of Friedel Craft.s acylation :
One hydrogen from the benzene is replaced by the acetyl portion of the acetyl chloride, Hydrogen and chloride from the benzene and acetyl chloride respectively combine to form HCI.
(b) Esterification: When ethanol reacts with acetic acid in the presence of an acid catalyst a sweet smelling ester is obtained. This reaction is called Esterification.
General equation for esterification is as follows:
