a] Pure ethanoic acid freezes at `27^@C` during winter and resembles a glacier, hence the name glacial acetic acid.
b] Ethanol when mixed with water freezes at a higher temperature than water, hence it is used in radiators of cars in cold countries.
c] Methanol is poisonous, hence when mixed with ethanol, it makes the latter unfit for consumption.
d] Oxyacetylene gives out a large amount of heat when burnt.
e] Alcohol added to petrol increases the efficiency of the fuel.

A compound X is formed by the reaction of a carboxylic acid C_2H_4O_2 and an alcohol in the presence of a few drops of sulphuric acid. The alcohol on oxidation with alkaline potassium permanganate followed by acidification gives the same carboxylic acid as used in this reaction. Give the names and structures of the a) carboxylic acid b alcohol and c) the compound X. Also write the reaction.

(i) You have three unlabelled test-tubes containing ethanol, ethanoic acid and soap solution. Explain the method you would use to identify the compounds in different test tubes by chemical tests using litmus paper and sodium metal. (ii) Give the reason of formation of scum when soaps are used with hard water.

When we take 1 ml ethanol and 1 ml ethanoic acid along with a few drops of concentrated sulphuric acid in a test-tube a sweet smelling substance is formed. Name the compound and give the balanced chemical equation for the reaction. What do we call the reverse reaction to give back alcohol and carboxylic acid which is used in the preparation of soap ?

Ethyl ethanoate smells like pears and is used for flavouring sweets. a] Write the chemical formula of ethyl ethanoate. b] Write the chemical reaction between ethanol and ethanoic acid in the presence of sulphuric acid. c] Suggest the function of sulphuric acid in the reaction.
