What is `tan^(-1)((1)/(4))+tan^(-1)((3)/(5))` equal to ?

A

0

B

`(pi)/(4)`

C

`(pi)/(3)`

D

`(pi)/(2)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

`tan^(-1)((1)/(4))+tan^(-1)((3)/(5))`
We know, `tan^(-1)x + tan^(-1)y = tan^(-1)((x+y)/(1-xy))`
So, `tan^(-1)((1)/(4))+tan^(-1)((3)/(5))=tan^(-1)(((1)/(4)+(3)/(5))/(1-((1)/(4))((3)/(5))))`
`=tan^(-1)(((5+12)/(20))/(1-(3)/(20)))`
`tan^(-1)(((17)/(20))/((17)/(20)))=tan^(-1)(1)=(pi)/(4)`.
