If a monoatomic gas at `17^@C` is suddenly compressed to `1/8`th of initial volume B, then the new temperature will be …….

A

887 K

B

36.25 K

C

2320 K

D

1160 K

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
D

If a gas compressed suddenly then adiabatic process occur and in this process.
`T_1V_1^(gamma-1)=T_V_2^(gamma-1)`
`therefore T_2=T_1(V_1/V_2)^(gamma-1)` but `T_1`=17+273 =290 K
`=290xx(8)^(5/3-1) " " [because gamma=5/3]`
`=290xx(2^3)^(2/3)`
=290 x 4
`therefore T_2` = 1160 K
