Why does NO(2) dimerise?...

Why does `NO_(2)` dimerise?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`NO_(2)` contains odd number of valence electrons. It behaves as a typical, odd molecule. On dimerisation, it is converted to stable `N_(2)O_(4)` molecule with even number of electrons.
`NO_(2)+NO_(2)rarrN_(2)O_(4)`
