Write a note on the anomalous properties of Nitrogen.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Nitrogen has small size, high electronegativity, high ionization enthalpy and non - availability of d - orbitals.
Nitrogen has the unique ability to form `ppi - ppi` multiple bonds with itself and with other elements having small size and high eletronegativity (e.g. C, O). Nitrogen exists as diatomic molecule with a triple bond . Its bond enthalpy `("941 KJ mot"^(-1))` is very high. Nitrogen has less capacity for catenation . It does not form `dpi - ppi` multiple bonds.
